What Is It About Jesus That Demands Our Attention?
What is it about Jesus that requires our attention and demands our worship? It is that He is supreme over all. He is God over all. In Colossians 1:15–20, Paul reminds us that Jesus is the image of the invisible God and the Creator of everything. His supremacy over all creation calls us to honor Him in every aspect of our lives.
The Invisible God Made Visible
God is Spirit, dwelling in a realm that is unseen by human eyes. Yet Jesus is the visible expression of the invisible God. He is not simply another prophet or a good person walking by; He is the very God in the flesh—the perfect representation of the Father. As Colossians 1:15 states, “Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation.”
No Other Image
In Exodus 20, God commanded His people not to make any images for worship because He alone is the true and living image. This means that we do not need any special revelation or representation—Jesus is enough. His identity as God incarnate means He fully satisfies our need for an image of the divine.
Jesus, the Eternal Creator
Jesus is not only the visible image of God, but He is also the Creator of all things. In John 8:58, Jesus boldly declared, “I tell you the truth, before Abraham was even born, I Am!” This statement reveals His eternal nature. Moreover, in Revelation 22:16, Jesus proclaims, “I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this message for the churches. I am both the source of David and the heir to his throne. I am the bright morning star.” These verses underscore His divine authority and eternal existence.
All Things Are for Him
What makes Jesus worthy of our worship is that everything was created for Him. Though humans might set themselves upon thrones of their own making, Scripture teaches that Jesus is Lord of all. He created everything for His own purposes, and His intention in creating us was for His pleasure and glory.
Sustainer of Our Lives
Jesus not only created all things, He also sustains them. He holds your life together and works in every detail for your good. As Romans 8:28 reassures us, “And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.” This means that nothing is outside of His control; every aspect of our lives is woven together by His hand.
Conclusion: Our Response to His Supremacy
If Jesus is supreme over all things—if He is the Creator, Sustainer, and visible image of the invisible God—then He deserves our full attention, devotion, and worship. We are not meant to live for ourselves but for Him.
So the question remains: Is Jesus at the center of your life?
If He is truly Lord over all, then He must also be Lord over you. Let us respond to His greatness by surrendering our lives in worship, obedience, and love, knowing that He alone is worthy.
“Worthy is the Lamb who was slain—to receive power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and blessing.” (Revelation 5:12)
