Christian Stewardship: Why Do We Give to God

Christian stewardship is about how we manage everything God has entrusted to us—our time, talents, money, possessions, and even our lives. We are not the owners—God is. We are simply caretakers.

When it comes to giving, especially money, it can feel uncomfortable for some. But giving is a key part of our worship and spiritual growth.

Why do we give to God?

1. What is Stewardship?

A steward is someone who manages someone else’s property.
📖 Luke 12:42-43 – “A faithful and wise steward…”

In the Christian life, God is the owner, and we are stewards of everything He gives us, including:

  • Our time
  • Our gifts and talents
  • Our possessions
  • Our money
  • Our very lives

2. Why Do We Give to God?

Reason 1: To Acknowledge God as Creator

Giving reminds us that God owns everything. The earth and all in it belong to Him.
📖 Deuteronomy 10:14
📖 Haggai 2:8 – “The silver is Mine, and the gold is Mine,” says the Lord.

Giving is our way of saying, “God, You are the source of all things.”

Reason 2: To Honour God as Our Provider

Though we work, it is God who provides—He gives us strength, wisdom, and opportunities.
📖 Genesis 24:35
📖 Psalm 116:12-14

Giving is a way to say “Thank You, Lord.”

Reason 3: To Show Our Trust in God

Giving is an act of faith. We trust God to take care of us, even after we give.
📖 Luke 6:38
📖 Matthew 6:25-33

In God’s kingdom:

  • We live by dying
  • We receive by giving
  • We lead by serving

Giving reflects our confidence in God’s promises.

Reason 4: To Reveal Where Our Heart Is

Jesus taught that our money follows our hearts.
📖 Matthew 6:21 – “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
📖 Matthew 6:24 – “You cannot serve both God and money.”

How we spend and give shows what we truly value.

Reason 5: To Join in God’s Work

When we give, we support God’s mission—through the Church, outreach, and helping others find Christ.
📖 Exodus 25:1-8
📖 Matthew 28:11-15 – Even enemies of the Gospel use money; how much more should we use what we have to advance God’s kingdom?

Reason 6: To Please God

God is delighted when we give cheerfully and willingly.
📖 2 Corinthians 9:7-8

“God loves a cheerful giver… and will generously provide all you need.”

Giving is worship, not bribery or pressure. It reflects a heart devoted to God.

Conclusion

As you reflect on these six reasons, remember this:

  • Giving is not manipulation.
  • You have the Holy Spirit—He guides your heart.
  • Give freely, not under pressure.

📖 2 Corinthians 9:7-8 (again):
“Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”

Prayer

Lord, help me to honour You with everything You have given me. Teach me to be a faithful steward, placing You first in every area of my life. Amen.
