The Adventure of Being a Friend of a Mysterious God

Throughout this series, we have established a powerful truth: God is unsearchable and mysterious.
Romans 11:33 reminds us, “Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out.”

God cannot be fully explained. His thoughts are higher than ours (Isaiah 55:8–9), and His ways are beyond tracing out.

Yet here is the wonder:
Though God is unsearchable, He is knowable.
He may be beyond full comprehension, but He is not beyond relationship.

The Christian life is not just believing in a mysterious God. It is becoming His friend.

1. Knowing About God vs Knowing God

Philippians 3:10 says, “That I may know Him…”

Paul, though deeply educated in Scripture, did not desire mere knowledge about God, but a personal experience with Him.

There is a clear difference:

  • You can know facts about God and still not encounter Him
  • Information is available to everyone, but intimacy is not automatic

Even James 2:19 shows that belief alone is not enough. True relationship goes beyond knowledge.

The word “know” here speaks of deep, personal, relational experience. God is not inviting us into information, but into friendship.

Is your spiritual life mainly built on consuming sermons and books, or are you pursuing personal encounters with God?

Abraham was called a friend of God, not because of knowledge alone, but because he walked with God in obedience, trust, and relationship.

2. Mystery Invites Pursuit

We often see mystery as something to solve, but with God, mystery is an invitation.

In Exodus 3:1–6, Moses encountered the burning bush. Instead of walking away, he turned aside to look. That moment led to a life-changing encounter.

This teaches us:

  • God’s mystery is not meant to push us away
  • It is meant to draw us closer

Proverbs 25:2 says, “It is the glory of God to conceal a matter; to search out a matter is the glory of kings.”

Mystery is not God hiding from us. It is God inviting us deeper.

3. Revelation Is Progressive

God reveals Himself step by step.

  • Moses experienced His glory in part
  • Isaiah saw His holiness
  • The disciples walked with Jesus before receiving the fullness of the Spirit (Acts 1:8)

Growth in God is a journey.

What God showed you before may become clearer now. What you are learning today will unfold more in time.

Do not demand the full picture. Stay close. Trust the process.

4. The Joy of Lifelong Discovery

There is no final point in knowing God. There is always more.

Even near the end of his life, Paul still desired deeper intimacy.

Philippians 3:12 says, “Not that I have already attained… but I press on…”

This shows us:

  • Spiritual hunger should remain alive
  • Relationship with God never becomes stale

Knowing God is a lifelong adventure, not a one-time experience.

5. Becoming Spiritually Sensitive (Living by the Spirit)

John 3:8 says, “The wind blows where it wishes… so is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

To live this way means:

  • You are led by the Spirit
  • Your life is guided by divine wisdom
  • Your decisions are not controlled by fear
  • Your life cannot always be explained by human understanding

Galatians 5:25 reminds us to walk in the Spirit.

A friend of God becomes spiritually sensitive:

  • Guided from within
  • At peace even in uncertain situations
  • Directed by God beyond human logic

6. Cultivating Friendship with a Mysterious God

Friendship with God requires intentionality.

1. Cultivate Hunger

Matthew 5:6 – Hunger for righteousness

Hunger grows through:

  • Prayer
  • Worship
  • Meditation on Scripture
  • Turning away from distractions

Psalm 63:1 – Seek Him early and earnestly

No one drifts into intimacy.

2. Develop Sensitivity

Isaiah 30:21 – God guides those who listen

Sensitivity involves:

  • Quick obedience
  • A soft heart
  • Responding to conviction
  • Yielding to correction

Romans 8:14 – Those led by the Spirit are sons of God

3. Walk in Consistency

Acts 2:42 – Continue steadfastly

Consistency matters more than intensity:

  • Stay faithful in every season
  • Whether you feel spiritual or not
  • Whether things seem clear or not

Hebrews 10:23 – God is faithful

The Abraham Challenge

In Genesis 18:17, God said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do?”

This reflects deep friendship and trust.

The question is:
What kind of life leads to that level of intimacy?

God is still looking for people who desire more than information. He is looking for friends.

Conclusion

Many believers have gathered knowledge about God through sermons, studies, and conferences. But information without encounter is incomplete.

Philippians 3:10 calls us higher:
“That I may know Him…”

This is an invitation:

  • Not just to learn about God
  • But to walk with Him

A life led by the Spirit may not always be understood, but it will always reflect His presence.
