Our God is a God of power and this is evident throughout the Bible from the creation story to the present day. He upholds all things by the word of His power (Hebrews 1:3). Recognizing God’s power is foundational to understanding our ability to walk in His power. His names reflect that He is Almighty – Elohim, Elshaddai, Adonai, Jehovah Sabaoth.
The Scripture also confirms His omnipotence in many ways, as seen in the following: Jeremiah 32:17 – “O Sovereign Lord! You made the heavens and earth by your strong hand and powerful arm. Nothing is too hard for you.” Hebrews 1:3 – “The Son radiates God’s own glory and expresses the very character of God; he sustains everything by the mighty power of his command. When he had cleansed us from our sins, he sat down in the place of honor at the right hand of the majestic God in heaven.” Psalm 62:11 – “Once God has spoken; twice have I heard that power belongs to God.” Ecclesiastes 8:4 – “Where the word of the king is, there is power.”
Jesus affirmed this power, promising believers authority and miraculous abilities:
- Mark 10:27: Jesus looked at them and said, ‘With man, it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God.’
- John 1:12: But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.
- Luke 10:19: Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you.
Our redemption has made us sons of God and automatically transferred this power to us, making the ability to walk in God’s power every believer’s right. However, the following hindrances often obstruct this path:
- Lack of Knowledge: Ignorance of our identity in Christ limits our power (Philemon 1:6, Ephesians 1:13-14).
- Prayerlessness: Prayer is vital for accessing God’s power (Luke 18:1, James 5:16).
- Fear: Fear undermines faith and hinders God’s power in our lives (2 Timothy 1:7).
- Wrong Company: Negative influences and wrong associations can stifle spiritual power (Proverbs 13:20).
- Pride: Pride alienates us from God’s grace and obstructs His power (James 4:6).
- Selfishness: Self-centeredness prevents us from experiencing God’s power in its fullness (1 Corinthians 10:24, Philippians 2:3-4).
- Living in Sin: Unrepentant sin drains our spiritual power and affects our relationship with God (John 8:34).
To overcome these hindrances:
- Cultivate your knowledge of God’s Word and your identity in Christ.
- Prioritize prayer and fellowship with God.
- Confront fear with faith and trust in God’s promises.
- Choose associations wisely, seeking relationships that encourage spiritual growth.
- Practice humility, selflessness and obedience to God.
- Repent of sin and pursue righteousness.

As we cast aside these hindrances through repentance, prayer, humility and right associations, we position ourselves to demonstrate the transformative power of God.
