What Do We Look for in the Bible?

“You must be able to give a defence for why you are a Christian”.

John 5:39–40 “You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life.”

Many acknowledge that the Bible is the greatest book ever written – the most popular, most translated, and most enduring. Yet, people approach it for different reasons:

  • Some read it to attack or disprove others.
  • Some keep it as a charm to ward off accidents or evil.
  • Some only open it when they need healing or prosperity.

But God’s Word is not a mere book of magic, prosperity, or selective doctrines. The Bible carries a universal message—one that transcends cultures, times, and circumstances. That message is Christ.

The Bible’s Central Message: Christ

Luke 24:25–27 “And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.”

The Bible was written by different men at different times, yet the golden thread connecting every book is Jesus Christ. From Genesis to Revelation, He is the focus.

When you pick up the Bible, the first thing you must look for is Christ.

  • John 1:45“We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”

Christ Revealed in the Scriptures

Acts 8:32–35 “Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus.”

Charles Spurgeon once said, “For every text of Scripture, there is a road to Christ.” The question you should always ask is: “How does this lead me to Jesus?”

Some examples:

  • Genesis 1:1–3John 1:1–3: The light at creation points to the true Light, Jesus, who gives life to all (John 8:12).
  • The Sabbath rest → Symbolic of Jesus, who says, “Come to me…and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).
  • Noah’s Ark → A picture of Christ as the only door of salvation (John 10:9).
  • The Passover Lamb in Exodus → Pointing to Jesus, “the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29).
  • Malachi’s prophecies → Not merely about tithes, but about “the messenger…who will prepare the way before me”—Christ (Malachi 3:1).

When We Look for Christ…

Romans 8:32 “He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?”

When you find Christ, you find all you truly need.

  • Colossians 1:15–17  – “In him all things hold together.”
  • Romans 11:36  – “For from him and through him and for him are all things.”
  • Ephesians 1:3–4  – “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.”

It is an insult to open the Bible and seek anything above or apart from Christ. He is the centre of Scripture and the foundation of our faith.

The Challenge

Pick up your Bible and sincerely seek Christ in its pages. Study it systematically. The more you know Him, the more you’ll realise that everything else is found in Him.

The evidence for our faith is in the Scriptures themselves. This is why Peter wrote:

1 Peter 3:15 “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.”And that reason is Christ—the fulfilment of the Law, the Prophets, and the hope of all believers.
